Why Traceability Matters

Paper records and fragmented data slow down production and increase risk

  • Traceability becomes a reconstruction project before every audit

When records live on paper travelers or disconnected spreadsheets, demonstrating compliance means spending weeks chasing down signatures and cross-referencing lot numbers. The effort diverts resources from production, and an incomplete record puts the business at risk.

  • Manual data entry creates gaps in the device history record

Operators writing serial numbers by hand or checking boxes at the end of a shift introduces transcription errors. A missed signature or an illegible lot code turns into a documentation nonconformance that halts the release of an otherwise perfect batch.

  • QA review bottlenecks slow down product release

If quality teams review every line of every record manually, finished goods sit in quarantine waiting for approval. Capital gets tied up in inventory, and lead times extend because the verification process lags behind the factory floor.

How Tulip builds an unbreakable digital thread from raw material to finished product

Tulip captures genealogy and traceability data automatically at the point of work. The platform connects directly to the scales, scanners, and systems at the station, so material usage, operator actions, and inspection results form a continuous and immutable record.

End-to-End Traceability

Every Record Traces Back to the Same Thread

Part and material providers, operator tasks, ambient conditions, and equipment maintenance history all sit on the same record instead of scattered across separate systems. When a quality issue shows up, investigating it means following one thread back through production.

Material-Level Scanning

The Material Gets Scanned Into the Record

A barcode reader captures material, component, and operator data at each step, so the record builds itself as the work happens instead of getting reconstructed from memory afterward. That connection runs on the same edge hardware that connects any scanner or device that isn't natively networked.

Electronic Signatures and Audit Trail

The Sign-Off Lives Inside the Same Record

Who signed off, and when, on assembly, inspection, or packaging gets captured as part of the same record, with electronic signatures built to meet 21 CFR Part 11 and Annex 11. That record stays auditable for the batch or the individual product.

Genealogy Reaches Back to Design and Spec

Genealogy doesn't stop at the production record. It connects back to PLM for design and spec changes, and syncs with ERP so materials, orders, and batches stay tied together end to end, instead of living in three systems that each know part of the story.

Governed Change Control

Lock Down a Process Only Where It Matters

Governance features let you remove red tape where a process doesn't need it, and lock it down where it does, so a genealogy workflow can stay flexible in low-risk areas and controlled in the ones that actually carry risk.

PLM-connected workflows driving AS9100 compliance

Echodyne deployed digital workflows connected to their Arena PLM, ensuring operators always interact with the latest approved engineering instructions. By centralizing their documentation into a digital execution layer, they created a robust, auditable foundation for their AS9100 quality journey.

"Everyone says single source of truth, but it’s really just that single source of truth for engineering, for documentation, for eDHR — a clear single source of truth for manufacturing execution."

Questions? We have answers!

Product genealogy is the complete historical record of a product's lifecycle, from raw materials to the finished good. It tracks which components and lots went into a specific serial number or batch, who performed the work, what equipment was used, and the results of any inspections. This detailed traceability allows manufacturers to investigate quality issues, execute targeted recalls, and prove compliance to regulatory bodies.

Tulip digitizes eBR and eDHR processes by guiding operators through steps and capturing data automatically. Instead of a paper form filled out at the end of a shift, Tulip records machine readings, material scans, and operator inputs exactly when they happen. The system timestamps every action and associates it with the correct work order, closing the record automatically once the workflow completes.

Tulip captures electronic signatures within apps to verify actions like step completion, review, or approval. The signature requires the user to re-authenticate, and the system records the user's identity, the exact timestamp, and the meaning of the signature. This process supports compliance with regulatory frameworks including 21 CFR Part 11 and Annex 11.

Tulip integrates with ERP systems to synchronize inventory and production data. You configure apps to pull the latest work orders, bills of material, and lot information directly from the ERP via API. As operators consume materials on the floor, Tulip pushes that consumption data back to the ERP, keeping inventory levels accurate without manual data entry.

Tulip enforces data collection by building it directly into the guided workflow. You configure the app to require a barcode scan, a tool measurement, or an electronic signature before the operator can proceed to the next step. If a required field is empty or a scanned lot number is invalid, the app prevents the user from moving forward.

Tulip creates an immutable audit trail of every action taken within the platform. The system records app building, version approvals, operator execution, and data modifications. When an auditor requests the history of a specific batch, you retrieve the complete and timestamped digital record immediately rather than spending weeks reconstructing paper logs.
